Rhino is one of my favourite CAD (Computer Aided Design) softwares to use, because of its easy 3D work views and the control it gives the user when building 3D models. I have been using CAD for two years and have created various different pieces of jewellery. My most recent piece was a necklace that was designed for a live project I did with a company called Charles Green. We were given a stone which we had to use to create a piece with a retail price of £150. I had a 9x6mm Amethyst and my inspiration was fabric and the way it moved. I had to make a promotional poster to go with the piece to evoke the emotion of it.
CAD is rapidly becoming an indispensible tool to the jewellery industry. It gives us greater freedom with our designs and cuts down cost. Customers can see the product before it’s been made and get a greater feel for what it will look like, also if they want any minor changes such as the size or position of a stone you can quickly make the changes without any cost to you.
